Zoology department

History:

The department was established in 1952. Two years intermediate course was established in the same year. BSC Course with Zoology, Botany, Chemistry was started in the year 1961, Subsequently BSC Course with Zoology, Physics and Chemistry combinations were started. In the year 2006 -07 academic year BSC Course with Zoology, Biotechnology, Chemistry combinations was started. This is one of the major groups in the biological sciences, working under the affiliation of Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. The first head of the department who ran successfully and paved the way for development of the department was professor Miss D. Ranganayaki. M.A Hons, later Mrs P. Indira, MSC, Mrs P.K. Jayalakshmi, MSC, MPhil,Mrs.K.Sakkubai MSC, Dr. Masthanamma, MSC, MPhil, PhD, Dr. K. Manoranjani, MSC, PhD, Dr. P. Vijayalakshmi, MSC, PhD, B.Ed. and Dr.R. Nigarsulthana, MSC, PhD headed the department one after the other.

The department is offering three undergraduate courses in Zoology, with Botany, Biotechnology, physics and chemistry combinations. Now department is offering BSC Zoology Honours course, under the affiliation of S.V. University. Tirupati.

Present the head of the department is Dr. K. Sirisha, and other faculty members are Dr. A. Sireesha and Dr.P. Sreelatha. All the faculty members are highly qualified, well experienced, and hardworking. Striving hard for students bright future with personal and professional ethics. Always accessible to students to help in academics Aswell as their Personal problems. And looking after their overall wellbeing.

The department has two well equipped labs, lab I is Darwin lab and lab II Is Karl Landsteiner lab, lab have compound and dissection microscopes, hot plate, induction stove, specimens and bio-visual charts, glass ware and advanced equipment PCR, Autoclave, deep freezer, hot air oven, centrifuge, digital PH meter, BOD Incubator etc., The departmental library is there with 120 books readily available for students for quick reference.

To bring overall development among the students department is organizing student class room seminars, micro teaching, quiz, debate, elocution, drawing and essay writing competitions, Field trips, encourages to participate in rallies along with NCC & NSS Students. And also, to inculcate social responsibility encourages to involve in clean and green, charity programmes, poor fund collection, and awareness programmes regarding communicable diseases, personal hygiene, cancer, AIDS, etc.,

The faculty is striving hard to bring best out come from the students. we follow internal assessments regularly without partiality and conducting study projects, assignments, monthly tests Every year the department getting 98-100% success rate in the University examinations. With high no of Distinctions. All the faculty members involved in giving continuous guidance regarding higher education, job opportunities, preparation techniques for both degree and competitive exams. Majority of our students were pursued and pursuing their higher degrees and some of them were settled in abroad and doing their MS.

Classroom seminars

The students are encouraged to deliver seminars and attend conferences to develop knowledge in understanding the subject and the communication skills.

In the laboratory students do practical’s on blood groups, physiology experiments, spotters observation, slides observation under microscopes etc.

Every year on Feb 27th on the eve of science exhibition students enthusiastically participates in preparing different models, charts, poster presentations etc which brings their creativity skills and innovative skills.

Chart preparation and group discussions among slow learners and fast learner students, to improve knowledge and to overcome the subject learning fear. It also helps the slow learner students to learn how to prepare the notes and in easy way how they can draw the diagrams.
