History:

Department of Population studies was started in the year 1979 along with Economics and Political Science. Later on Geography, History and Population Studies started as GHPs group with Telugu medium. Mrs. K. Sujatha was the first member and head of the department. Dr. A. Swarnalatha was joined as part time lecturer on 12.10.1992 and regularised as lecture in 2004. Dr.Najiruddin, Sri Chinnaswamy Naidu, Dr. Ravindra were worked as Guest lecturers . At present, the head of the department is Dr. C. Sujathamma and Dr.T. Sankaraiah is Guest lecturer.

Vision and mission of the department:

Vision:

  • To reach young women student’s community through education and foster skills like self-reliance, leadership and Independence. To impart the adequate knowledge of Population studies to the students and make them capable of applying it practically providing a comprehensive, relevant curriculum at all levels with latest techniques.
  • To develop and understanding among the younger generation about the demographic concepts and process.

Mission:

  • To empower women students through quality education and to produce intellectuals by extending them creative and innovative environment for young demographers to learn and develop their abilities.

Objectives:

  • To develop an appreciation of small family norms as proper and desirable.
  • To train the students in the field of family planning to check the population growth.

To create awareness among the students on Population Education.

  • A laboratory catering to the needs of the students

Library / Books and other resources:

  • Library has good number of population studies books (150) and two journals , namely Political weekly , yojana etc., and about 200 books in the digital library.
  • Apart from having huge central library, the department exclusively has a departmental library with about 70 books maps and charts of population education.

Department of Geography and Population studies conducted an elocution competition on 08.07.2023 on the eve of world Population Day on the topic “How to Safeguard the Health and Rights of women and Girls now and putting the brakes on COVID-19”. The I, II and III year students of Population Studies participated in the elocution competition. Mrs. P. Sarada, Head, Dept. of Economics and Mr. K. Sudhakar, Lecturer in Hindi were invited as the judges.

Awareness Programme

On Safeguards to Women and Children conducted at SPWD & PG Collage,Tirupati in collaboration with department of Women Studies, SV University, Tirupati. Dr.prabhakar, Assistant professor, Ambedkar Law Collage, tpt explained about cyber crime to our students .
