Life skills are a set of important tools to ensure that an individual leads a fruitful life. Life skills empower young people to take positive action to protect themselves and promote health and positive social relationship. Thus, life skill course will help in promoting mental well being and competence in young people as they face the realities of life. Self-awareness, self-esteem and self-confidence are essential tools for understanding one’s strengths and weaknesses.

The World Health Organization has defined life skills as, "the abilities for adaptive and positive behaviour that enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life".

They include creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, the ability to communicate and collaborate along with personal and social responsibility that contribute to good citizenship - all essential skills for the success in 21st century both for healthy societies and for successful employable individuals.
