Statistics department

History:

The Department of Statistics was established in the year 1989-90 by Dr.C. Mani M.Sc, Ph.D HOD Department of Statistics affiliated with Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati. The intake of students are 50 in the Course B.Sc (MSCs). In the year 1992 Smt. R.Sarala Lecturer in Statistics, SV.Arts College, TTD, Tirupati was deputed to SPW Degree College, Tirupati. In the same academic year, a new Course in BA (MAS) was started. The strength was gradually increased and reached to 150. The Department is equipped with class room and laboratory and has marked a steady growth in curricular and co-curricular aspects.

At Present Dr. A.Vidhyulatha is the Head of the Department and other faculty members include Dr. M.Pushpalatha and Dr. K.Sreenivasulu faculty members now working are highly qualified, talented, experienced and committed to their duties. The faculty members lay emphasis on inclusion of modern teaching technologies viz. LCDs, virtual models, videos and Practical demonstration. Nearly 500 students opted for B.Sc/B.A., Statistics subject, besides this it has huge departmental library having 150 books. Recent reputed e-journals are readily available in the Statistics department for upgrading their knowledge purpose. Department is conducting various knowledge enriching programme like Student Seminars, workshops, Quiz programme, Group discussions, Elocution etc.

Every year the department result exhibits between 95-100%. The students are encouraged to pursue higher education, internships, field visits and projects. Many of our students got selected in various universities for PG programmes and Placement Drives. Statistics deals with an art of managing resources efficiently and the science of achieving a successful career.

Mission:

  • “Department of Statistics is committed to teaching theory and practice of statistics to UG students in statistical theory and methodology. The department is distinguished by the faculty’s strong interest in the application of statistics to such areas like life sciences, social sciences, behavioural sciences etc. The department is relatively small and the students benefit from the classes and close interaction with faculty members.

Goals:

  • Our goal is to think Statistically, how to apply useful statistical techniques, and how to perform research to advance statistical thinking and practice.
  • Impart education of the highest standard through value based holistic teaching and learning by integrating traditional and innovative practices in the multinational environment.
  • Inculcate a strong belief in hard work and core values of gender equality, humility and ecology in order to make them socially responsible citizens.
  • Equip students with the skills needed to adapt better to the changing global scenario and gain access to multiple career opportunities.
  • To attain self-reliance through balance of freedom and discipline within the body, mind and spirit.

Infrastructure :

The Department is facilitated with one room, Iron racks, wooden tables,S-chairs, Glass Door Almirah, calculators, statistical tables etc., By using the computer systems with MS Office Diagrams, graphs were designed and executed.

The Department of Statistics has R.A.FISHER Lab, the students are encouraged to the experiment to find the result. Department provide the students with the required equipment to come up with correct solutions.

The students of statistics are acquiring jobs every year in different companies based on their performance in interviews, various companies conducted drives for jobs in the campus throw which the students got employment.

3) Collaborations / MOU :

The department of statistics is having MOU with the department of PVKN Govt. Degree College, Chittoor and Department of statistics Govt Degree College for Women , Srikalahasti.

Activities:

1) Field Visits

Each academic year the students along with staff of the department are encouraged to visit other Universities at tirupati. The knowledge about statistics will be enhanced by the field visit and which is useful for their future studies.

2) Seminars / Conferences

Students are encouraged to deliver seminars and attend conferences during their academic schedule.

3) Quiz Competition

Each academic year the department of statistics conduct Quiz and group discussion based on the advancement of statistics in day to day usage. All the B.Sc/B.A statistics students are encourage to participate in quiz and group discussion.
