Department of Geography

History:

Department of Geography was started in the year 1980 as one of the subjects in GHPS group at BA degree level. The other two subjects are History and Population studies and the medium of instruction was English. But later it was changed to Telugu medium since most of the students are coming from rural areas.

Mrs.S.Sujitha Sangamithra worked as a lecturer in the year 1980-82. Later Mrs.G.Suguna joined as temporary lecturer in the year 1982 and regularised on 30.07.1984.

Dr.C.Sujathamma was joined as lecturer on 12.10.1992 and Dr. R.Syamala joined as contract lecturer in 24.10.2007.

Vision:

To reach young women student’s community through education and foster skills like self-reliance, leadership and Independence. To impart the adequate knowledge of Geography to the students and make them capable of applying it practically providing a comprehensive, relevant curriculum at all levels with latest techniques.

Mission:

To empower women students through quality education and to produce intellectuals by extending them creative and innovative environment for young Geographers to learn and develop their abilities.
To provide/develop quality education in the department.for students to help in careers in academia and industry.

Infrastructure :

1) Laboratories : Major Equipment in the Department.

A laboratory catering to the needs of the students, named W.M.Davis laboratory who is father of Geography.
The department is equipped with various instruments for the practical classes to the students to conduct experiments in individual and as well as group settings.
Rain gauge,
Wet and dry bulb,
Maximum and Minimum Thermometer,
Surveying instruments: Plain table and Chain surveying.
Reading room for the students of the department.

2) Learning Resources : Library / Books and other resources

Library has good number of Geography books (250) and two journals, namely Political weekly , yojana etc., and about 200 books in the digital library.
Apart from having huge central library, the department exclusively has a departmental library with about 70 books and hall with LCD projector, OHP and two computers with printer and DVD Player.

3) Research Facility :

Research Laboratory is available with 2Computers with internet facility
